Cook with Jamie Oliver: Throw a banquet for Chinese New Year with these delicious dishes

One of the things I love about the UK is that we're starting to embrace different cultural celebrations. With the bleak weather we've been having, I reckon we could all do with a bit of a party and in my eyes Chinese New Year, which falls on Sunday 10 February this year, is the perfect excuse to get your loved ones together and cook up a feast.

The beauty of Chinese cooking for me is that it's super quick and can be incredibly easy to achieve from scratch. I love trying different interpretations of it at home, but when it comes to special occasions, I think it's only right to call in the big guns.

So, these gorgeous recipes come to you courtesy of the brilliant Kylie Kwong. Kylie is Australian-born Chinese, and what I love is that she combines those influences to create fantastic dishes. I'm going to hand over to Kylie and let her fill you in on what a traditional Chinese New Year should involve, so get planning, and enjoy it!

Kylie says: 'Traditionally, the New Year's Eve dinner is sumptuous. The tremendous amount of food symbolises abundance and wealth for the household. A whole fish is usually served, which represents togetherness and plenty, as well as a chicken, which must be presented with head, tail and feet to symbolise completeness.

'Noodles should be uncut, as they represent long life. It's also vital to have flowers, in recognition of the fact that without them there would be no fruit.

'The menu I've prepared here does not strictly adhere to the traditional Chinese New Year; it is more a reflection of my Australian-Chinese upbringing and what I love eating the most.'

MUSSELS WITH SALTED BLACK BEANS AND RED PEPPER

Serves 8-10 as a starter

  • 1kg (2kg 4oz) live mussels, all tightly closed
  • ½ a red pepper , deseeded
  • 60ml (2¼fl oz) peanut oil (from Ocado)
  • 7 spring onions, trimmed and cut into 5cm (2in) lengths
  • 1.5cm (¾in) piece of ginger, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 3 large red chillies, halved lengthways and deseeded

  • 2tsp brown sugar
  • ½tsp sesame oil
  • 2 red bird's eye chillies, sliced
  • 2tsp malt vinegar

Scrub, debeard, rinse and drain the mussels. Put in a wok with 375ml (12½fl oz) cold water over a high heat; cover a nd steam. As the mussels begin to open, immediately remove them, using tongs, and place in a bowl. Discard any that don't open. Drain the wok, discarding the water and wipe clean with kitchen paper. Cut the red pepper into 1.5cm (¾in) wide strips, then into squares. Heat the peanut oil in the wok until the surface shimmers slightly. Stir-fry the pepper, spring onions, ginger, garlic, large chillies, onion and black beans for about 4 minutes or until fragrant. Add the mussels to the wok and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes. Pour the wine or sherry around the sides of the wok in a circular motion, then stir in the stock or water, light soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil and sliced bird's eye chillies. Stir-fry for 3 minutes to create a rich sauce. Stir in the vinegar and serve immediately.

STIR-FRIED NOODLES WITH GARLIC, CHIVES AND CHILLI

Stir-fried noodles

Stir-fried noodles

Serves 8-10 as a starter

  • 3tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 small red onion, cut in half and then into thick wedges
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 3-4cm (1¼-1½in) piece of ginger,  finely sliced
  • 620g (1lb 5½oz) fresh Hokkien (egg) noodles
  • 2tbsp shaoxing wine (from Ocado) or dry sherry
  • 1tbsp white sugar
  • 2tbsp low-salt light soy sauce
  • 1tbsp malt vinegar
  • ½tsp sesame oil
  • 1 bunch of garlic chives or regular chives,  cut into thirds
  • 50g (1¾oz) bean sprouts
  • 6 spring onions, julienned
  • 2 large red chillies, deseeded (optional) and finely sliced on the diagonal

Heat the vegetable oil in a hot wok until the surface shimmers slightly. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and stir-fry for 1 minute, or until the onion is lightly browned. Toss in the noodles and stir-fry for 2 minutes then add the wine or sherry, sugar, soy, vinegar and sesame oil and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes. Add the garlic chives, bean sprouts, spring onion, and half the chilli and stir-fry for a further 30 seconds or until piping hot. Arrange on a platter, season to taste with a little soy, top with the chilli and serve immediately.

SPICY SALT DUCK

Serves 10 as a starter

  • 1tbsp Sichuan peppercorns (from supermarkets)
  • 3tbsp sea salt, plus 3tsp to coat the duck
  • 4 duck breasts (about 200g/7oz each), skin on, trimmed of excess fat
  • 2tbsp flour
  • 1tsp chilli powder
  • ½tsp ground cumin
  • ½tsp ground fennel seeds
  • ½tsp ground ginger
  • Around 700m l (1¼pts) vegetable oil
  • 1 large red chilli, finely sliced diagonally
  • 3-4 spring onions, julienned
  • 2 lemons, halved

First, make a Sichuan seasoning: dry-roast the Sichuan peppercorns with the 3tbsp sea salt in a heavy-based pan. When the pepper starts to pop, removed from the heat, cool and grind to a powder in a pestle and mortar. Set aside.

Arrange the duck breasts, skin-side up, on a heatproof plate that fits inside a steamer basket. Place inside the steamer and position over a deep saucepan or wok of boiling water and steam, covered, for 12 minutes or until the duck is half cooked.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the flour, chilli powder, ground cumin, fennel seeds and ginger with ½tsp of the sichuan seasoning and the 3tsp extra sea salt. Remove the plate from the steamer, transfer the duck breasts to a wire rack and set aside fo r 25 minutes. Toss the duck in the spicy flour mixture to coat well, shaking off any excess. In a wok, heat the oil until it shimmers slightly. Deep-fry the duck for about 2-3 minutes, until just cooked through and lightly browned. Drain well on kitchen paper. Cut the duck on the diagonal into thin slices and arrange on a serving platter with a small bowl of sichuan seasoning. Garnish with the sliced chilli and spring onions, then serve with the lemon for squeezing over.

At the height of her drug addiction Danniella Westbrook would have happily given away her son.

However, the former EastEnders actress was not acting selfishly and admits that she would only have handed her little boy over to social services for his benefit.

The 39-year-old former heroin addict has been clean for the last 12 years and believes that helping vulnerable children is her true calling in life.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she said: 'My friends say to me, 'Could you really take someone's kid and bring it up and then give it back?' And I say yes, because if someone had offered to take my son away from me when I was really ill, I would have grabbed the chance with both hands.

'I wanted social services to take him but they told me they couldn’t help.'

Danniella, who is a born again Christian, and her husband Kevin are applying to become foster carers after years of trying for another child.

Despite already having Kevin's daughter Jordan, 18, Danniella's son Kai, 16, and their one child together, Jodie, 11, they still tried for another kid but to no avail.

The couple never tried using IVF but accepted that they already have a great family unit, so now they hoping to help troubled children out instead.

Danniella, who will return to UK screens in Hollyoaks later this month, is particularly keen to foster those youngsters who come from drug and alcohol abuse homes, but insists she wouldn't want to split up siblings.

She told the newspaper: 'They might come with a lot of anger and issues but we're at an age where we can cope with it. It’s something we really want to do.'

With the many security checks that potential foster carers must go through, Westbrook is massively worried about her own past.

She had to have her nose rebuilt after years of substance abuse destroyed it and she was also diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

However, the former soap star is hopeful that after taking a fostering course and having her bi-polar under control she will get approved to foster.

Danniella told the newspaper: 'The country is crying out for more foster carers. It will be the hardest job in the world, but it will be the best job in the world too.'

Series four of Made In Chelsea saw Richard Dinan introduce his co-stars to his new girlfriend, after his relationship with Kimberley Garner failed to blossom.

But proving that ex lovers can still get along, Kimberley, 22, and Richard, 25, were seen putting on a very familiar display on Thursday evening at the new Chelsea haunt Upper West.

The former couple arrived at the launch party together, which did not go down too well with Richard's Made In Chelsea cast mate Francesca 'Cheska' Hull.

Looking forward to the event, on Thursday afternoon Kimberley posted a message about the party to her Twitter page including a direct mention to Richard.

She wrote: 'Launch party of #UpperWest tonight with @RichardDinan .. So excited for a new club on the kings road... ! X'

Dinan, the founder of The Phantom Card, then retweeted Garner's post as he readied their reunion.

Not the best of friends: Kimberley exclusively revealed to MailOnline that Richard asked Cheska to leave the club to avoid any drama

On arrival to the club, which is owned by Richard's business associate Alexander Nall-Cain, Garner and Dinan happily posed for pictures together.

And once on the dancefloor in the Kings Road located spot, which is no doubt soon-to-be popular celebrity hang out, Kimberley and Richard were seen getting very cosy.

But despite putting a smile on Richard's face, Francesca Hull, 22, was less excited to see Garner.

The pair notoriously failed to get along when Kimberley featured in the third series of the popular E4 show and it seems they are yet to put their differences aside.

Speaking to MailOnline exclusively about the evening, Kimberley revealed that Richard made an attempt to diffuse the tension with Cheska.

She said: 'I had a lovely night with my friends, and I had no interaction with Cheksa all night.

'Richard had to ask Cheska to leave soon after her arrival due to her yet again needlessly aggressive behaviour.'

With tensions rising, Garner added: He basically told her to "f*** off", and Cheska left early as she obviously was not welcome at the Chelsea Club.'

And opening up about the current status of her relationship with Richard, she said: 'Richard and I have reminded great friends despite Binky and Cheska's endless jealous attempts to do everything they can, as seen on the show.

'Richard recently invited me to his birthday with only a few of his closest friends at his family home in the country with his parents. Binky and Cheska were not invited.'

A representative for Ricard also told MailOnline: 'Richard Dinan and Kimberley Garner were having a business meeting prior to the event so it was only natural that they attended the opening of Upper West together, accompanied by a large group of friends.

'Everybody had a great evening, but it is understood that upon arrival Cheska had requested for Kimberley not to be allowed entry.'

A spokesperson for Francesca 'Cheska' Hull has been contacted.

Not allowing any tension to ruin her mood, Kimberley, who recently became the proud owner of a house on Kings Road, danced the night away as she celebrated her latest purchase.

Ditching her favourite colour white, Garner wore a slinky black top with a pair of leather leggings and black boots.

Accessoring with gold bracelets, the fashion designer wore her blonde hair down and kept her make-up simple.

Cheska put on a leggy display in a flirty white dress made up of a pleated skirt and a lace top.

Other Made In Chelsea members at the party included Ollie Locke, Alexandra 'Binky' Felstead, Sophia Sassoon and Gabriella Ellis.

Escentual.com spokesman Rakesh Aggarwal, who carried out the research, said: 'The survey showed a huge difference in attitudes to romance across the country.

'Some areas like Reigate were extremely generous at Valentines â€" some other areas much less so.

'Most couples tend to start shopping for their presents on 31 January and next weekend and the week after will be peak sales weeks for perfume.'

Women in North Shields, won’t be so happy with Valentine’s gifts this year, the Tyne & Wear town was the lowest spending town in the UK with a lowly average spend of £11.95.

Kelly Brook has confirmed that she has split with boyfriend Thom Evans via her Twitter account, but has denied that it had anything to do with her meetings with ex-boyfriend Danny Cipriani.

Former rugby star Thom is said to have questioned the stunning brunette repeatedly about her frequent outings with her ex - who she was seen meeting alongside her best friend Preeya Kalidas in London on Saturday night.

But Kelly, who is currently in Miami, Florida, has claimed that ending the two-year relationship was mutual, writing: 'Thom and I mutually agreed to go our separate ways some time ago. It had absolutely nothing to do with a third party.'

According to The Sun, Thom, 27, decided to end his two-year relationship with Kelly, 33, last week because he was growing increasingly unhappy about her friendship with Cipriani, also a rugby player.

A source said: 'Even though there was nothing going on while she and Thom were together, Thom hated the fact she was seeing him and Kelly refused to end their meetings.

'After one row too many the pair decided to end things. She’s been leaning on Danny since the break-up and, while she’s devastated, she knows it’s for the best.'

She hid her eyes behind a pair of large sunglasses and wrapped up warm in a baggy blue wool jumper and a pair of slim fit jeans.

One-time Scottish international player Thom has reportedly already moved out of the home he and Kelly shared and is planning a short-term move to Los Angeles to focus on his acting career.

The source added to the Sun: 'Thom told Kelly that he’s always wanted to live in LA but never made the leap because she was so against it.'

Following the news of the split breaking, Kelly has flown to Miami, Florida, for some winter sunshine.

Kelly and Thom first met in a nightclub and began dating in December 2010. In March 2011 she announced via Twitter that she and Evans were expecting a baby girl, but she later tragically suffered a miscarriage.

The Saturdays' Mollie King and Rochelle Humes co-ordinate colours and coats on night out with JLS

It's not unusual to see pop bands wearing matching outfits for performances.

But for Mollie King and Rochelle Humes colour coordination doesn't have to end as soon as they leave the stage.

The Saturdays members shared a red and blue colour palette, with matching cream trench coats as they hung out at Mayfair hotel on Thursday night.

Mollie's outfit consisted of a white T-shirt  and chain-linked miniskirt that showed off her toned legs.

Carrying a large black tote bag and walking in tanned ankle boots, the singer looked like she was still dressing for a night in warm LA rather than cold London.

Pregnant Rochelle's style was far more laid-back, opting for trousers, a striped T-shirt and cap-toed ballet pumps.

The tartan lining of her trenchcoat showed it was a piece from Burberry's signature outerwear collection, and the black buttons co-ordinated with her shoulder bag and long ebony locks.

Joining Rochelle and Mollie were the expectant mother's husband Marvin Humes and his bandmates, who had earlier in the night had been singing his wife's praises: 'She is the most beautiful pregnant lady.

'Like most women who have had children, it’s pretty tough but she is strong. She is a trooper - nothing phases her, she’s dealt with it really well.

'She has had rough days but she’s doing great,' the JLS star told MailOnline at their perfume launch.

But as Rochelle headed home, she left Marvin to continue his night out with the lads at the Rose Club.
