As any seasoned bargain-hunter will tell you, searching for that must-have item takes time.

And research revealed yesterday that the average Briton trudges around the shops for 18 full days every year.

A survey asked 1,000 people how long they spend browsing and buying a list of key products, including groceries, clothes and shoes, health and beauty, entertainment and gifts.

It found that the supermarket was the number one shopping destination with consumers spending an average of two and a half hours each week shopping for food.

The time includes a big weekly shop and popping into the supermarket for one-off purchases and fresh items. However, those who bought their groceries online said it took just 14 minutes to complete the main shop.

Around two and a half hours a week was spent just pottering around with shoppers saying they like to browse before making a purchase and like to compare prices in different stores.

One woman respondent commented: 'I absolutely hate grocery shopping. I can easily spend a good hour doing a big shop for the family then I’ll be back in the supermarket the next day because I’ve forgotten something.

'That time popping back and forwards really starts to add up when you sit down and think about it.'

Another added: 'I often waste my lunch hour browsing around the shops without buying anything. I just like to see what they have in.

'If it’s something I really like, then I tend to check the price online when I get home. If it’s cheaper, then I buy it that way.'

A spokesman for PromotionalCodes.org.uk, said: 'Britons love to shop, or at least browse around the shops. It seems to be a weekend hobby for a lot of people.

'For some, shopping can be a chore, especially if it’s something like food shopping which is why so many opt to do this online. It saves them time and cuts this boring task out of their weekly schedule.

'Sensibly, many do shop around and compare prices. Often they find the item they really want, especially if it’s a luxury or a high cost purcha se, at a cheaper price online.'
