Controversial X Factor contestant Christopher Maloney has 'come out', revealing he is gay.

'Honestly, I've never denied it or anything like that.

'It's just that with the show it was always an inappropriate time or people just asked inappropriate questions.'

Maloney told Wootton that he has had a serious boyfriend for over three years and added to the magazine: 'No one asked. I didn't speak about my love life because I didn't want my partner to be dragged through this.

'It wasn't to gain votes or anything like that.'

And he's already received a positive response from a fellow homosexual star from last year's X Factor series, Rylan Clark.

The Celebrity Big Brother winner wrote on Twitter: 'Proud of @ChrisMaloney77 xxx.'

Maloney's confession comes after The X Factor tour wrapped up at the end of last month.

During his time on the show, the singer, who came third in the competition, caused a number of controversies.

He is alleged to have launched into a foul-mouthed tirade and refused to appear on the live final of the series before Christmas, which saw James Arthur eventually crowned winner.

The 34-year-old also allegedly turned up for rehearsals for the final worse for wear, and was 'abusive' to fellow contestant Carolynne Poole.

His future on The X Factor tour was thought to be in jeopardy as a result but was soon seen turning up to rehearsals.

Maloney has since revealed to Now magazine that he was going through 'a breakdown' as a result of the pressures from The X Factor.

He has previously spoken about sick death threats he's received since his time on the programme.

This week's issue of Now magazine is out on Tuesday.
