Rio Ferdinand is heading in the right direction as he tries to convince England fans he can still mix it with the youngsters after enjoying a night out on the town with the world’s biggest boy band.

Ferdinand has been named in the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro but all the talk over the weekend was about whether he would take up his place.

Ferdinand played the whole game against the Royals and celebrated the victory with a trip to watch One Direction in Manchester.

He tweeted during the gig: ‘Just at the 1Direction concert....ear drums are struggling...never heard so much screaming!! Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!! Lads on fire!’

One Direction’s Harry Styles tweeted a picture of him wearing United shirt with Ferdinand’s name on the back and said: ‘Hope you enjoyed the show tonight rioferdy5.’

United had concerns about Ferdinand being able to juggle commitments for club and country but Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the 1-0 win over Reading that the 34-year-old will join the Three Lions. Wearing his colours: Styles showing off his Manchester allegiance

And England manager Roy Hodgson said:  ‘Our medical people are in constant contact with the medical people and the sports science people at all the clubs so we have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done.

‘I regard myself as a custodian of these players. They belong to the clubs, that’s where they earn their money. We try to send them back in good condition.

‘One hopes that the chance to play for England would be great motivation. Sir Alex has been very fair but I obviously am aware that, when you take a lot of players from one club you are placing a burden on the club and manager.’

Ferdinand is one of six United players in the England squad. He won the last of his 81 caps against Switzerland in June 2011 but was dumped when Hodgson replaced Fabio Capello.
