Her partner is rocker Matt Bellamy so it should come as no surprise that Kate Hudson has a bit of a rebellious streak.

The actress let her hair down at The Savoy hotel during the Warner Music Group Brit Awards party at in association with Samsung and Vanity Fair.

Matt's band missed out on two gongs with his band Muse at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night but that didn't prevent Kate from joining in with the post-ceremony celebrations.

After her handlers swept away partygoers from a sofa in the hotel's Parlour Rooms, which was taken over by notorious club The Box, Kate and a friend lit up and shared a crafty cigarette INSIDE the famous hotel.

Partner Matt declined to join in, but Kate openly puffed away on the cigarette which she had clearly been looking forward to.

A source told MailOnline: 'Kate looked stunning but she was clearly dying for a smoke.

'Partygoers were stunned to see her lighting up inside The Savoy, which is a pretty ritzy institution, but no one tried to stop her.'

Snappers were prevented from taking photos of the actress as she joined partygoers to watch performances by acts more commonly seen at the notorious club.

And Kate, who partied in a black Ermanno Scervino black lace dress minidress, looked every inch the naughty schoolgirl as she dipped her head to puff on the illicit cigarette, while she enjoyed the cabaret performance with Matt.

The Savoy banned smoking from all its public areas in January 2007 pre-empting the official smoking ban which will came into force in England in July of that year.

The ban extended to all the hotel’s restaurants, bars and communal areas.

Establishments that fail to stop patrons from lighting up could face fines of £2,500.

Earlier in the evening Kate clambered on sofas at the venue to dance along to Mark Ronson's DJ set.

Kate looked incredible in her strapless black lace dress and brightened up the ensemble by adding a pair of bright orange patent heels.

The mother-of-two left her blonde hair loose in tumbling curls, and went for a dramatic make-up look with thick black eyeliner, keeping her lips pale.

Kate finished off her outfit with a gemstone necklace and delicate silver bracelet to top things off.

Matt, meanwhile, opted for a black leather jacket and black trousers as he put any disappointment over losing out on the awards behind him to celebrate the evening out with his wife.

And after a few minutes of solo dancing, Kate was joined by Matt - who had opened the Brits show at the O2 Arena with band Muse accompanied by a 75 piece orchestra - as the pair bopped and sang along to the musical entertainment at the bash.

The superstar couple were joined by a host of familiar faces as they enjoyed the star-studded after-party.

Guests enjoyed Belvedere cocktails including the brand's signature drink the Belvedere Zephyr.

One Direction star Harry Styles kept the evening going after earlier attending the Sony party, and quickly found himself surrounded by attractive blondes after rocking up to the event without his bandmates.

Mark Ronson, who played an exclusive set on the night, was seen alongside wife Josephine de la Baume, and newly-engaged Tamara Ecclestone looked as tanned as ever as she posed up with a mystery male inside the event.

Meanwhile, Holly Willoughby caused something of a stir in her revealing outfit.

The 32-year-old presenter wowed in a plunging black tuxedo-style dress, highlighting the curves which earned her the nickname 'Willoughbooby'.

Holly accessorised the LBD with a pair of gold court shoes, a stack of bangles and a slick of bright red lipstick, topped off with a black shoulder bag.

But despite having fun at the event, Holly admitted she was going to have to call it a night early because of a busy day on Thursday.

She tweeted: 'Brits-done, boat party- doing, cab home-soon????!!!!'

And it seems Holly's levelheadedness paid off, as she tweeted early on Thursday: 'Good morning! Bright eyed and bushy tailed for a double whammy of this morning and the voice #britted.'

Guests at the party were treated to a peformance from the band FUN., while Ronson acted as the headline DJ for the evening.
