Gary Lineker has mysteriously quit  Twitter, claiming he is closing his account ‘for personal reasons’.

The Match of the Day host, who joined  the social networking site last year, quickly became one of Britain’s most popular users with 1.3million followers.

However, he signed off at 7.20pm on Friday with the cryptic message: ‘I’m leaving Twitter for personal reasons. Thanks all.’

A spokesman for the presenter would not comment on his decision.

However, a BBC Sport spokesman claimed Lineker had decided to delete his account because he had be en spending too much time online.

She said: ‘The only reason I’ve been told is that he decided to come off [Twitter] because it was taking up too much of his time.

'I’ve just spoken to the executive producer and everything is as normal.’

The announcement also comes five months after the former England footballer was targeted by an online ‘troll’ who joked about his 20-year-old son’s childhood battle with leukaemia.

Dozens of fans took to Twitter to voice their shock at his departure.

His son George wrote: ‘Old man’s deleted his account... he’s come off Twitter. I’ll sort him out.’

Rachel Martin wrote: ‘We will miss Gary, Your tweets were great value,’ while Karl PT added: ‘ Mrs L kicked off has she?’

Last night there was no sign of Lineker or his wife, Danielle Bux, at their home in south-west London.
