Gary Lineker has mysteriously quit Twitter, claiming he is closing his account âfor personal reasonsâ.
The Match of the Day host, who joined the social networking site last year, quickly became one of Britainâs most popular users with 1.3million followers.
However, he signed off at 7.20pm on Friday with the cryptic message: âIâm leaving Twitter for personal reasons. Thanks all.â
A spokesman for the presenter would not comment on his decision.
However, a BBC Sport spokesman claimed Lineker had decided to delete his account because he had be en spending too much time online.
She said: âThe only reason Iâve been told is that he decided to come off [Twitter] because it was taking up too much of his time.
'Iâve just spoken to the executive producer and everything is as normal.â
The announcement also comes five months after the former England footballer was targeted by an online âtrollâ who joked about his 20-year-old sonâs childhood battle with leukaemia.
Dozens of fans took to Twitter to voice their shock at his departure.
His son George wrote: âOld manâs deleted his account... heâs come off Twitter. Iâll sort him out.â

Last night there was no sign of Lineker or his wife, Danielle Bux, at their home in south-west London.
